Once Upon A Time
Television Show on ABC
Rumpelstiltskin
Contractor | Negotiator | Magician
ABC's, "Once Upon A Time," presents an evoking world of magical contracts whereby one boy holds an imagination powerful enough to conceive how to break a spell cast over the town of Storybrooke by the Evil Queen who poses as the Mayor of the town. While there are many examples of contracts in this intriguing show, such as the contract of the spell itself, this example will cover Rumpelstiltskin and his unique art of forming agreements.
In Episode 6 (I think), Rumpelstiltskin appears on the scene of the home of Cinderella just as she is about to receive the magic of her fairy godmother, which will enable her to attend the Ball where Prince Charming awaits to fall in love with her. Rumpelstiltskin destroys the fairy godmother and takes her wand, claiming to be doing Cinderella a favor, warning her that all magic comes with a price.
Cinderella practically begs Rumpelstiltskin to use the magic wand to help her, to which he replies with a simple question, "And what will you give me in return?" (Real Quote Needed) In the end he simply states that he will grant her everything she wishes if she agrees that she simply agrees that she owes him a favor.
Negotiation
The negotiation between Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin is quite sly. They wish to perform an exchange of equal value, mutually beneficial to both parties. He allows her to fully describe what she wishes to receive in the agreement, while subtly defining what he receives in return as a favor. As soon as Cinderella agrees without any condition to the contract, she waives the right to negotiate the details of the favor that is to be her payment (performance of her obligation) in the exchange.
Rumpelstiltskin awaits the proper time to disclose the details of the favor. He shows up at Cinderella's wedding to ask if she is happy with his end of the deal, to which she replies, "Yes." Once he is assured that his side of the bargain is fulfilled, he then discloses the details of his favor as being Cinderella granting him ownership and possession of her first born child.
In essence, Cinderella ends up granting Rumpelstiltskin a blank check in exchange for her wish, which puts her in a compromising position when the bill is presented and becomes due.
